Nose Clips

Nose clips are tiny gadgets that press the nostrils together. They can be purchased to use on the bridge of your nose, squeeze the nose shut, or they can be bought to put over the nose and mouth. Swimming nose clips keep water out of the nasal passage. They are used by swimmers to ensure that water is not inhaled while swimming. Clips can reduce the infection and irritations caused by inhaling water. Synchronized swimmers are not allowed to use masks, but are allowed to use swimming nose clips.

Latex with stainless steel clips or hypo-allergenic ones with plastic clips are the most popular. These are clips for the bridge of the nose and are adjustable. Make sure you purchase one that is comfortable, but tight enough that it should allow no water in and no air out and not too bulky. Swimming nose clips can come equipped with a neck cord so that they stay securely around your neck and are not easily lost. Nose clips may come with padding for a longer and more comfortable wear. Look for a clip that is not too bulky and it should fit snuggly to seal the nasal cavity.

If you are learning or teaching someone how to swim for the first time, swimming nose clips can be a big help. First-timers usually will usually take in water through the nose when trying to swim. Nose clips will help train them not to breathe through the nose when under water. Most people can keep their mouth closed, but breathing through the nose is an involuntary thing and the nose clips will keep that from happening. Breathing water through the nasal cavity is not a pleasant experience and can be off-putting for a first-timer.

If you wear a swimming nose clip that is too small or too large, it can harm your nose. Check the encasing around the clip before using. If there is a crack, the clip could break and cause damage. After usage, rinse the clips with tap water and store.
