Baby Swimwear

Baby swimwear normally needs to be functional as well as cute! Swimwear for babies certainly has come a long way to where you can now find the perfect piece of swimwear no matter what your requirements are. Not only does most baby swimwear serve a purpose but it is usually also well made and looks great on baby. There is a vast selection of gender specific swimwear available, as well as many different special swimwear that is suited to different occasions.

Regular baby swimwear includes the baby swimsuit. There are many different styles of swimsuits available for babies. Baby boys' swimsuits are usually fairly functional and can be either the tighter fitting swimming trunks or baby board shorts. There is a large variety of baby girls' swimsuits available, ranging from the cute little one-piece to the baby bikini. Many mothers prefer to dress their little baby girl in a bikini rather than a one piece suit, mainly because the one-piece suit can be quite difficult to fit on a wriggling, energetic baby.

Many swimsuits come with an accompanying 'cover up' top or shirt, which is specifically designed to match the swimsuit and to offer additional protection from the sun while the baby is either in the water or playing in the sun. You can also find sets that include a matching hat for baby. For added protection from the sun, look for tops with built in UV protection; there are quite a few available with 35+ UV protection, while some go up as high as 50+ UV protection.

If you live in colder climates or your baby simply tends to get quite cold when swimming in the water, you could look into purchasing a baby wetsuit. They are designed to be worn by babies, thus they offer easy access and they are usually quick and simple to put on baby as well. Many of them have Velcro ties. Some are a body wetsuit only, providing extra warmth around the baby's body; others have sleeves that extend down the arms. They are particularly great to use if your baby is having swimming lessons. Usually these lessons last up to thirty minutes at a time which can be a long time for a very young baby, or one who is susceptible to the cold. Using the wetsuit helps keep baby warm for the duration of the lesson.

There is also swimwear that is specifically designed to help your baby learn how to swim, and to offer an extra level of protection while they are playing in the water. Typically, these types of baby swimsuits have hard foam inserts sewn into the swimsuit around the body area. Sometimes these panels are removable, although usually with the suits made specifically for babies and toddlers they are not. When a baby is wearing this type of swimsuit their arms and legs have freedom of movement and they can actually help aid your baby learn the proper swimming motions.

One other essential item of baby swimwear is the baby swim diaper. There are different kinds of swim diapers. Some are one piece and are pulled on and off, while others have Velcro attachments or ties. It is best that the diaper is gusseted at the legs in order to hold any solid waste in the diaper, should your baby do anything while in the water. You can also buy disposable swim diapers, though these can end up being fairly expensive if you and baby swim often. Many people prefer the reusable swim diaper. These are usually lined with either a cloth lining, or some other type of lining which is replaceable. If the diaper is not lined, and it must be laundered each time it is used, the simplest thing to do if you are planning on spending a lot of time by the pool or at the beach is to buy a few swim diapers. That way you will always have one on hand should you need it.

When evaluating baby swimwear and what you should purchase for your baby the two main considerations are comfort for your baby, and ease and convenience of use. The more comfortable baby remains while swimming and afterwards, the happier and more positive experience you will both have.
